Chapter X

AD 1302

Tower of London, England

Nicholas did not speak throughout Kiera’s explanation, aside from asking an occasional clarifying question. When she was done, the group stared in silence, causing Kiera’s heart to race as she wondered how much of her story, if any, would be believed.

Robert was the first to break the silence. “A tale if I’ve ever heard one. Let me guess, the coven’s plan features an attack while we were enraptured by your lies?” He glanced toward Nicholas. “Shall I cut out her tongue, or would you prefer the pleasure?”

“She’s not lying,” Nicholas stated.

“What?”

“The girl isn’t lying.”

“I don’t follow.”

“She has my sister’s ring.”

“She could have had a replica made, to trick you.”

“No one alive knows what this ring is, or its meaning.” He extended a hand, lifting the golden trinket which hung around her neck. Examining the ring, Nicholas slid a finger along the band until he found the inner bubble, where he knew it would be. “‘Tis the same band. And besides, the way she told the story,” he shook his head, “I detected no deception in her words. Did you?”

“She is a member of the Bargarran Coven. It is possible she could hide her lies, even from us.”

If I had been more willing to step up to my duties, and responsibilities, things never would have gotten this far out of control. The vision I saw coming here—I recognized the woman who murdered my parents, though from where I am uncertain. Nor am I aware of why she killed them.”

Kiera’s voice showcased her heartbreak. “I understand you don’t recognize me, nor do you share all of these memories. But, Nicholas, you’re my guardian. You have protected me, and acted as a surrogate parent, all my life. I need your help.”

At her tone, Aisling placed a hand on her shoulder, offering comfort with the limited contact.

“We will help you, my lady. You may rest here tonight, and on the morrow, I shall summon Lady Serena. She may be able to restore you to your proper place and time.”

“Thank you,” she answered, intending to hug him of old habit, but forced herself to stop. “Sorry.”

“Quite all right,” he answered, stepping forward to wrap the girl into a brief embrace. “I am pleased to meet you, Kiera, and look forward to the day we shall get to know each other better.”

“Thank you,” she answered.

“You are welcome here, as is your escort, if he chooses to stay.”

“I would like to,” Aisling spoke for the first time since her tale had begun. “Until I am certain she is safe.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I promised to see you safely home. A promise I have yet to fulfill.”

Guiding the newcomers down the hall, they were escorted to side-by-side rooms. A bath was heated and drawn, much to Kiera’s relief. The fall into the stream, along with the
